On a hot summer’s day a few months ago, with nothing to do, we took a drive to Hanging Rock. About an hour’s drive away from Melbourne is a cluster rocks that seem to stick right out of the earth. After a little bit of reading, I found that the rocks are called mamelon. Created 6.25 million years ago by stiff magma pouring from a vent and congealing in place.
The rocks were very impressive and after a short hike up we were rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the Macedon Ranges.
It was certainly well worth the effort to walk up, and a very enjoyable way to spend the day.
